The purpose of ID cards
As the name indicates, ID cards are primarily used to identify the cardholders. A great many types of identification features exist, all of which belong to one of two major categories:
- Visual elements (photo, signature)
- Interactive elements (barcodes, magnetic stripes, chips, RFID tags…)
ID cards are also used for access control, which requires more than just identification features. It requires security features. These latter elements, whether they are overt or covert, are used to confirm the validity of a given card. Here are some examples:
